On June 13, 2009, the Honorary Consulate of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka opened. This is the third place in Japan to be opened here because many Sri Lankans live in Ibaraki prefecture. Honorary Consul is Medagama Gamage Sunil (43). While operating a trading company in Joso city, he is busy with sending educational materials and welfare equipment for Sri Lankan children and the elderly, and at the reception desk for accepting technical intern trainees from Sri Lanka. He said, “I would like to make the two countries more active in economic and cultural exchanges and strengthen friendships.”
